Abstract
The motif or central theme in the thought of Adnan Al-Sayegh is always on a transformative trajectory, interacting with his intellectual premise, which revolves around the human being. It distills the outcome into accessible poetic words that allow the audience, depending on their level of understanding and exploration, to derive distinct meanings from the surface and depth. "Escaping stagnation" is considered the most prominent feature of the motif in Al-Sayegh's poetry. Through this, various codes consistently link the meaningful microstructures of his poetry to form a separate yet cohesive image of the overarching symbol intended by the poet. Although the poet has not maintained the same quality in crafting all the elements of his compositions—at times succumbing to haste at the expense of elegance—this study aims to analyze the different types of motifs in his poetry. It seeks to examine the extent and influence of this literary function and its manifestations from the individual to the societal level, analyzing each from the perspectives of sociology and psychoanalysis as envisioned by the poet. Chandler's semiotic theory assists this study by uncovering the initial codes in each text, presenting Al-Sayegh's foundational ideas, and tracing the progression of these codes within each poem to explain their evolution into the overarching concept of the master symbol. This paper clearly evaluates the coherence of thought reflected in Al-Sayegh's works, analyzes the quality of his poetic texture, and ultimately, illustrates the master symbol of humanity and its various functions from his perspective.
